“Each year the average person will use around 90 drink cans,
70 food cans, 107 bottles and 45 kg plastic”.

Sheila and Mike Castell-Spence found this statistic very concerning having always been conscious of the impact we, as consumers, have upon the environment.

Mike originally from Dannevirke, spent almost 40 years in the UK on what must be one of the longest OE’s, during which he met and married Sheila from the Shetland Islands.

Planning to always return to New Zealand, Mike and Sheila were on the lookout for a business to bring back with them -ideally one which would somehow help meet the environmental challenges which New Zealand, along with other developed countries, faced with regard to managing and minimising the increasing waste problem.

Tom Fairbairn owner of The Waste Recycle Company in Northern Ireland had developed a unique product – EcoDepo- designed to help businesses recycle efficiently.

EcoDepo had already won various awards in the UK for its originality and functionality and in 2007, Mike and Sheila approached Tom with a proposal for distributing EcoDepo in New Zealand.

Despite the recession and the negativity starting to hit the world they chose to continue with their plans and in July 2008, Sheila and Mike had secured the distribution rights for EcoDepo, and launched EcoPods NZ Ltd.

Businesses looking for office recycling bins were quick to see the potential of EcoDepo, and organisations using the ‘Pods’  include schools, Councils, Government agencies, heavy industry  and national and multinational companies.
